How the Singapore Flyer Was Built & How It Works

The Singapore Flyer opened in 2008, on reclaimed land at the eastern edge of Marina Bay, at a moment when the whole waterfront was being reimagined as the city's showpiece district. It arrived a couple of years before Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay, part of the same wave of ambition that turned a working harbour edge into a landmark skyline. Standing around 165 metres tall, it was, when it opened, the tallest observation wheel in the world — a title it held for several years before larger wheels were built elsewhere. The choice of a giant observation wheel, rather than a simple viewing tower, was deliberate: a slow-turning wheel offers a constantly changing 360-degree perspective that a fixed platform cannot.
The scale of the structure
The numbers behind the Flyer are worth pausing on. The wheel itself is roughly 150 metres in diameter, and the whole structure reaches about 165 metres — comparable to a building of around forty storeys — with the rim sitting on top of a three-storey terminal building at the base. Twenty-eight sealed capsules are fixed around the outside of the rim, each one large enough to hold a sizeable group and tall enough to stand and walk around in. Supporting all this is a spoked wheel braced by a framework of cables and struts, engineered to stay rigid and stable in tropical heat, monsoon wind and sudden storms. It is a genuine piece of large-scale engineering, closer in spirit to a bridge than a fairground attraction.
How a continuously turning wheel works
One thing that surprises many first-time riders is that the wheel never stops. Rather than halting to load each capsule, the Flyer turns slowly and continuously, and passengers step aboard and off while it is moving at walking pace past the boarding platform. The rotation is gentle enough that boarding on the move feels natural and unhurried, and it means the wheel can keep a steady flow of guests without the stop-start jolts of a smaller ride. A single full rotation takes about half an hour. Drive motors turn the rim at this carefully controlled speed, and the capsules, mounted on the outside of the wheel, are kept upright throughout by their mountings, so the floor stays level no matter where you are in the circle.
The capsules: sealed rooms in the sky
Each capsule is effectively a small, self-contained room. Fully enclosed and air-conditioned, with full-height glass on all sides and bench seating, they are designed for comfort in Singapore's climate — which is why the Flyer runs happily through both the midday heat and a passing tropical downpour. The enclosure also means the ride is smooth and quiet, with none of the exposure of an open-air wheel. Because the capsules are climate-controlled and stay level as the wheel turns, the experience is more like standing in a slowly rising glass room than riding a traditional attraction. That design choice is central to the Flyer's appeal: it makes the ride accessible and relaxed, suitable for young children, older visitors and anyone who would rather not be buffeted by wind at height.
The change of direction
One of the Flyer's best-known quirks is that it reversed direction not long after it opened. When it first began operating, the wheel turned one way; within a few months the direction was switched, and it has run that way ever since. The change is widely reported to have been made on the advice of feng shui consultants, the idea being that the new direction turned the wheel toward the city and its prosperity rather than away from it. Whatever weight you give to that reasoning, the reversal is a genuine and often-retold part of the Flyer's story, and a nice piece of trivia to share with fellow passengers as your capsule climbs. It is a reminder that in Singapore, tradition and cutting-edge engineering often sit comfortably side by side.
Keeping a giant wheel running
A structure of this size needs constant care. The Flyer undergoes regular maintenance, and it occasionally closes for scheduled works or private events, which is one reason your booked date and time are always the figures to trust over any general opening hours. Behind the scenes, the drive systems, capsule air-conditioning, safety mechanisms and the structure itself are all monitored and serviced to keep the wheel turning reliably day after day. For visitors this mostly stays invisible — the point of all that engineering is that the ride feels effortless. But it is worth knowing that the calm, smooth half hour you experience rests on a substantial, continuously maintained machine, and that the occasional maintenance closure is a sign of that upkeep rather than a fault.
